Former Employee Alleges Meal Break Denial and Surveillance at Prime Rib Restaurant

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Iconic San Francisco restaurant Home of Prime Rib is underneath fireplace after a former worker filed a lawsuit on Monday saying workers have been denied meal breaks and watched with cameras.

Proprietor Joe Betz advised KRON4 that the lawsuit is “nothing but a fabricated story.”

The lawsuit was filed by a person named Shawn Hyatt, who labored for the restaurant from Could 2022 to July 2024. He says the restaurant’s homeowners by no means carried out meal or relaxation breaks that complied with California regulation. Legally, employers should present one 30-minute break for each 5 hours of labor.

Bartenders, servers, bussers, barbacks, hosts, and telephone receptionists are among the many workers who have been affected, per the lawsuit. Workers have been even advised that cameras within the restaurant have been monitoring them to make sure they didn’t take breaks or go away the premises throughout their shift, in keeping with the lawsuit.

Hyatt claims that workers have been advised they weren’t in a position to complain in regards to the restaurant’s insurance policies. Proprietor Steven Betz as soon as allegedly yelled at employees, “If you don’t like the way we do things here, there’s the [expletive] door.”
