DOJ reaches settlement with Antioch PD in racial discrimination scandal

(KRON) – The U.S. Justice Division introduced it has reached a five-year settlement with the Metropolis of Antioch and the Antioch Police Division concerning a racial discrimination investigation on Friday, in response to each departments. 

In accordance with the Division of Justice, the investigation stemmed from discriminatory textual content communications that dozens of Antioch law enforcement officials allegedly exchanged between September 2019 and January 2022. Antioch PD referred to as the actions that prompted the investigation “unacceptable.” 

Three former Antioch law enforcement officials who have been on the heart of the textual content messaging scandal will likely be placed on trial this yr. The trio of former officers, Morteza Amiri, Eric Rombough, and Devon Christopher Wenger, are criminally charged with a litany of civil rights violations.

The US Lawyer Ismail J. Ramsey stated, “A police department that discriminates based on race and other protected classes undermines both public safety and public confidence. Today’s agreement will help ensure that policing in Antioch is done constitutionally and will help restore public trust.”

In compliance with the settlement, the Antioch Police Division will rent an knowledgeable regulation enforcement marketing consultant to evaluate and replace APD’s insurance policies, procedures, and coaching. 

In accordance with the DOJ, the trainings will give attention to non-discriminatory policing, use of drive, hiring and promotions, investigations of misconduct, self-discipline, neighborhood policing, language entry and different subjects.

The DOJ stated the settlement “contemplates” a task for the Antioch Police Oversight Fee. Antioch PD may even must endure 5 years of knowledge assortment, reporting, departmental monitoring and different provisions.

The Antioch Police Division said the division will “continue to serve the residents of Antioch with honor, respect, and fairness.”

“We acknowledge that trust is earned, not given, and this agreement marks a meaningful step forward. We also remain fully cooperative with the California Department of Justice (CADOJ), which is conducting an independent pattern-and-practice investigation into the Department,” stated the division. 

Former Antioch mayor Lamar Hernandez-Thorpe stated, “My term as mayor was focused on making Antioch a safer city by addressing the longstanding mistrust between the public and the Antioch Police Department. As a result of today’s agreement, I am proud to say that my administration has successfully achieved its objective of reforming the culture of racism that has plagued the Antioch Police Department for decades.”

The investigation was led by the U.S. Lawyer’s Workplace and the Justice Division’s Civil Rights Division.
