(KRON) — A sick seabird with obvious oiled feathers was discovered on a seaside at Level Reyes Nationwide Seashore, park officers mentioned over the weekend. A wildlife biologist responded to Drakes Seaside to seize the frequent murre earlier than transporting it to a rehabilitator.

The fowl “appeared to have oiled feathers,” in accordance with the park, and didn’t flee from individuals visiting the seaside. Oil caught to feathers makes them not waterproof and makes birds liable to hypothermia. “Birds may try to remove the oil by preening and accidentally ingest the oil, sometimes resulting in organ failure or death,” Level Reyes Nationwide Seashore mentioned.

The park’s wildlife biologist was alerted to the sick frequent murre by guests and rangers. After the biologist assessed its well being, the seabird was transported to the Worldwide Chicken Rescue in Fairfield. Veterinary employees on the nonprofit rescue heart “are optimistic that the murre will recover,” park officers mentioned.

The park reminded guests in a social media put up that it’s unlawful for anybody aside from Nationwide Park Service employees to deal with or rescue wildlife on the seashore. “Besides the potential for disease exposure, people who are not wildlife professionals can seriously injure or kill wildlife while trying to catch it even if they are trying to do the right thing,” officers mentioned.

Park guests can inform rangers of sick or injured wildlife on the customer facilities or by calling 415-464-5100.
