SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Crime in San Francisco is at a 20-year low, in response to figures launched by outgoing Mayor London Breed’s workplace on Tuesday. SF has seen a “historic” drop in homicides and automotive break-ins, Breed’s workplace mentioned.

The town, in response to a press launch from Breed’s workplace, has made “historic gains confronting major crime trends.” Property crime in SF is down 31% year-over-year from 2023 and down 46% from 2017.

Violent crime noticed a 14% drop final 12 months in comparison with the 12 months earlier than and is down 26% from 2017. General crime in San Francisco in 2024 was at its lowest level since 2001, when town noticed a historic low in crime charges.

The press launch from the mayor cited new expertise, drug market interventions and investing in violence prevention as among the many key elements contributing to the drop in crime final 12 months.

“I’m grateful for the hard work by our law enforcement partners and everyone in the community working tirelessly to make our neighborhoods safer,” mentioned Mayor Breed. “This shows that when we give our officers the tools and support, like we have with new technology, they can deliver incredible results.”

“These historically low crime rates are proof that the hard work of our officers is paying off,” mentioned San Francisco Police Chief Invoice Scott. “Our department is short staffed, and many other officers were working overtime to meet San Francisco’s public safety needs. Even with these challenges, our officers delivered.”

“I would like to thank Mayor Breed and the San Francisco Police Department for their tireless efforts to keep our city safe,” mentioned SF District Legal professional Brooke Jenkins. “Although there is still more work to be done, the improving crime rates show that we’re moving in the right direction.”
