Oakland enterprise homeowners name for change to OPD's pursuit coverage

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) – A rally in Oakland on Wednesday is looking for police to chase criminals, whatever the nature of the crime. A number of enterprise homeowners voiced their assist for the change whereas the Oakland Police Fee mentioned the destiny of the present pursuit coverage.

The police fee held a city corridor on the East Bay Church of Spiritual Science. Forward of the city corridor, a number of Oakland companies confirmed up saying the present pursuit coverage is failing them.

Oakland’s present coverage bans officers from chasing after suspects until the suspects have a gun or are accused of a violent crime, like sexual assault or homicide.

Oakland enterprise proprietor Ali Albasiery says the Oakland Police Division doesn’t defend small enterprise homeowners like himself. He says all through his 40 years of being a enterprise proprietor, he’s been robbed and has had little-to-no assist from OPD.

“We’ve been seeing so many businesses broken into. We see it every single day, they get robbed, police come in, the robbers are there, they don’t chase them. We say, ‘Why don’t you chase them?’ They say, ‘We have a policy. We cannot chase criminals, we cannot chase anybody within the City of Oakland,’” Albasiery stated. 

One other issue that was up for dialogue on the city corridor was the present 50 MPH cap in circumstances of economic burglaries. Lots of the enterprise homeowners on the rally say criminals know this rule and improve their velocity on function to get away with crimes. Oakland resident Cathy Leonard helps this regulation. 

“I’m concerned that innocent people will be grievously harmed or killed if the police decided to extend this pursuit policy,” she stated.
