Evacuations ordered after fireplace erupts at Moss Touchdown energy plant

(KRON) — A fireplace has erupted on the Moss Touchdown Energy Plant Thursday night, officers stated. The hearth is at power firm Vistra’s energy plant in Monterey County.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Workplace issued evacuation orders for close by areas, based on the Monterey County Division of Emergency Administration. A map of the areas ordered to evacuate might be considered beneath.

As of 6:30 p.m., southbound Freeway 1 at Salinas Street is closed because of the fireplace, California Freeway Patrol Santa Cruz posted on X. There isn’t a estimated time for reopening.

Vistra stated the reason for the hearth is unknown and below investigation. All on-site personnel had been safely evacuated.

The momentary evacuation level is at Castroville Recreation Heart. There are full street closures as listed.

Dolan Rd. and Castroville Blvd.

Earlier this afternoon, Vistra personnel known as for help from the North Monterey County Hearth District after a hearth was detected within the 300-MW Part I power storage facility on the Moss Touchdown Energy Plant website. All website personnel had been safely evacuated.     

The reason for the hearth has not but been decided, however an investigation will start as soon as the hearth is extinguished.
