Alert: Avian Flu Detected in Backyard Poultry Flock in San Mateo County!

(KRON) — Well being officers have confirmed the presence of H5N1 (chook flu) in a yard poultry flock in San Mateo County. The county mentioned that whereas there are not any present human instances of chook flu, this detection of the illness highlights the chance to “anyone who handles, lives or works near birds, including residents who keep small flocks in their yards.”

The San Mateo County Division of Agriculture/Weights and Measures is advising residents who preserve yard rooster coups to look at for indicators of avian influenza of their flocks and take acceptable measures, like washing their palms after dealing with birds and disinfecting their footwear.

“It’s important for residents who keep chickens and other birds in their yards to protect their flock and themselves from H5N1,” mentioned San Mateo County Agricultural Commissioner Koren Widdel. “There are simple actions every flock owner can take to prevent the disease from spreading.”

Hen flu has been detected in a number of counties in California. Seasonable wild chook migration, in keeping with the county, creates a high-risk for all poultry house owners, together with these with yard flocks.

“The disease is mainly spread by wild birds, especially in waterfowl such as ducks and geese, and through contact with the virus from surfaces such as hands, shoes, clothing or feet and the fur of rodents and other animals,” the county mentioned.
