Vallejo Faculty Board Makes Bold Move: Two Programs Set to Close

(KRON) — The Vallejo Metropolis Unified College District (VCUSD) Board of Training voted Wednesday evening that two faculties will shut by the tip of this educational 12 months, the college district introduced. Mare Island Well being & Health Academy and Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy will shut down as soon as the 2024-25 faculty 12 months is accomplished.

The varsity board additionally voted that Vallejo Constitution College will relocate to the Mare Island campus, in accordance with VCUSD. All three aforementioned faculties are TK-8 (from transitional kindergarten to eighth grade).

It was a unanimous 5-0 vote to shut Mare Island Well being & Health Academy and transfer Vallejo Constitution to that closing campus. The board voted 4-1 to shut Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy.

The closure comes amidst the college board’s approval of a $12.8 million discount in price range for the 2025-26 faculty 12 months. In accordance with VCUSD, that features a $7.4 million discount in staffing prices.

“The decisions we made tonight were incredibly difficult, and we do not take them lightly,” VCUSD Board President John Fox mentioned in a press release. “We understand the impact this has on our students, families, and staff, and we are committed to supporting them through this transition. However, with declining enrollment and a shrinking budget, we must take action now to ensure the long-term sustainability of our district and continue providing high-quality education for all students.”

Final month, KRON4 reported that eight Vallejo faculties have been on the verge of closing. Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy was a type of eight.
