(KRON) — In what looks like an unlikely look on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s podcast to start with, MAGA firebrand Steve Bannon singled out an unlikely determine for reward: Progressive Bay Space Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Fremont). Bannon, a former advisor to President Donald Trump, hosts his personal “War Room” podcast.
On the second full episode of Newsom’s “This is Gavin Newsom” podcast, Bannon recognized three Democrats he views as “economic populists,” singling out Khanna specifically for reward.

“Of the three of the best economic populists in the Democratic party — who I think are on an island — one of the best is Ro Khanna,” Bannon informed Newsom. “Ro’s economic patriotism, which we always kid him is ripping off (Peter) Navarro and my economic nationalism, you know he’s an economic populist.”
Economist Peter Navarro is a senior advisor to President Trump who served within the first Trump administration. Like Bannon, Navarro served jail time for contempt of Congress.
Along with Khanna, Bannon singled out Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman and former Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown for reward.
“Fetterman’s a populist and then Sherrod Brown, Sherrod Brown I think’s been an economic populist for a long time,” Bannon informed Newsom. “So, there are very strong voices in the Democratic Party. I think unfortunately as a populist, they’re kind of on an island. Because it really hasn’t been the center of the conversation with the Democratic Party. I think those three are pretty good as far as populism.”
Newsom has raised eyebrows because the launch of his podcast final week. Within the inaugural episode, he informed MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk he thought it was “deeply unfair” for trans athletes to compete in girls’s and women’ sports activities. That remark drew widespread backlash, together with from State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), who known as Kirk a “vile bigot,” and mentioned the podcast was not a brave second for Newsom.
There may be widespread hypothesis that Newsom could also be gearing up for a presidential bid in 2028.
