Bloomingdale’s Shuts Down Its San Francisco Metropolis Centre Store: What It Means for Shoppers

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Bloomingdale’s can be closing its San Francisco Union Sq. location this spring, KRON4.com has confirmed. The situation, which was the retailer’s flagship retailer within the Bay Space, was additionally the final main anchor tenant at SF’s troubled San Francisco Metropolis Centre mall.

The previous Westfield mall has seen a raft of retailer closures over the previous two years, most notably, the mall’s large Nordstrom location, which closed in the summertime of 2023 after 35 years.

“We are saddened to confirm that Bloomingdale’s will officially close its doors in Union Square, San Francisco,” a Bloomingdale’s spokesperson informed KRON4. “This vibrant city has been home to the brand for nearly two incredible decades.”

“While we are committed to this decision, Bloomingdale’s doors will remain open until late spring 2025,” the spokesperson added. “We are hopeful to be back to serve the San Francisco community in the future and look forward to introducing new ways to provide enhanced service to our loyal local shoppers.”

“We don’t take this news lightly, but I am confident San Francisco’s best days are ahead,” said San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie in response to the closure. “There are massive changes happening across the country in retail, and we know there’s a lot of work to do in our city. Although this closure is disappointing, I’m energized every day by businesses of all sizes opening and growing in our city. San Francisco has green shoots everywhere, and we continue to work towards the revitalization of the city.”

Bloomingdale’s first opened on the mall again in 2006.

The Bloomingdale’s closure follows intently on the heels of one other main retailer pulling out of the mall. Final week, common designer model Michael Kors posted an indication at its SF Centre location, saying it was “closing soon.”

Macy’s, one other of the Union Sq. district’s long-term presences, additionally plans to shut its large flagship retailer this yr.
