East Bay Community Unites Against Hate: Investigation Launched into Racist Graffiti

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KRON) — A hate crime investigation is underway in San Leandro. This week, a brand new house owner reported racist graffiti spray-painted on her fence.

Neighbor Van Turner seen his neighbor Sonia Reed’s fence in unincorporated San Leandro was tagged with racist graffiti final week. He stated the messaging — daring, black spray paint studying “No Black” — hurts.

“It’s very sad,” stated Turner. “It concerns me. It definitely concerns me, and it hurts me that someone could have this kind of hatred in their heart.”

Reed bought the property in December however has not moved in. The house is below building, and he or she stated some neighbors have taken exception to her resolution to color the fence white — one specifically.

“This is a straight downright attack,” stated Reed. “The lady came out of her house and told me to my face she did not want to come out of her house and look into my Black face right across the street from her.”

“This is her first home, and she was so happy about the home and for something to be indicated on her fence, ‘no Blacks?’ it said, ‘no Black,’ sorry. If it had said, ‘no Blacks,’ then that would concern me. Now, this is a whole different situation because this is targeted on her,” Turner stated.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Workplace stated it has been investigating this case since final Thursday as a hate crime. In an announcement, the sheriff’s workplace stated:

“Such acts of hate have no place in our community, and we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all community members.”

Cynthia Adams is president of the Oakland chapter of the NAACP.

“This is very shocking at this day in time,” Adams stated. “Stand with the Oakland NAACP and the Hayward chapter and we’re going to see her through this — all the way. We’re not going to stand for this.”

“I think I’m gonna sell the house,” stated Reed. “Staying in that house — I put my kids in danger. I put my grandkids in danger.”
