Empowering Residents: Essential Skills for Responding to Potential ICE Raids

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) — Solidarity Community Monterey County held a two-hour public workshop for many who wish to reply to potential ICE raids in Seaside and Monterey County. Immigration allies, attorneys and migrants attended the coaching.

Solidarity Community Monterey County volunteers acted out eventualities of what it will be like encountering an ICE agent and how one can correctly stand one’s floor. The group is totally volunteer-based — with the objective to offer assist for migrants.

The attendees had been a mixture of migrant allies, metropolis leaders, native educators, unions and immigration attorneys.

Monterey County authorities warn of at-large ‘armed and dangerous’ man

“This is really touching my heart because when you see all of us together, the diversity of this group, that we are in this together to try and find support for our community members,” mentioned Sonia Jamarillo of Solidarity Community Monterey County.

As a former immigrant from Mexico, Jamarillo says she is aware of how scary it may be coming to a brand new nation for undocumented folks. With the Trump administration in energy, she says it has been overwhelming — to say the least — for migrants.

“We see our group struggling, our immigrants are hard-working households. Households who’re offering for his or her kids, working further arduous to have a greater life,” Jamarillo mentioned.

Magnolia Zarraga is a member of the group, in addition to an immigration lawyer. She says her objective is to show migrants what their rights are within the U.S.

“The concern is being picked up! Being picked up by immigration in the middle of the night, in the middle of the day, so we are educating them what their rights are,” Zarraga mentioned.

“It gives me hope even though we are in dark times right now that together we can make a difference,” Zarraga mentioned.
