(KRON) — A former Oakland instructor filed a lawsuit towards the Oakland Unified College District, claiming she was fired for not calling a transgender pupil by the kid’s most popular pronouns.

The plaintiff, Mirella Ramirez, cited her Catholic religion and the intricacies of the Spanish language as the reason why she didn’t name the coed by their most popular pronouns. The scholar was 5 years outdated on the time of the controversy, which was within the fall of 2022.

Ramirez was working as a kindergarten and first-grade instructor at Melrose Management Academy, a dual-immersion faculty that supplied lessons in Spanish and English at 4730 Fleming Ave. She had been employed by OUSD since 2017 and began working at Melrose that yr.

“This lawsuit is extremely important in that teachers are our first line of defense in protecting our children from dangerous indoctrination in our public schools,” stated legal professional Brian Festa, who represents Ramirez. “Parents all over the country have been voicing their opposition to these policies to their school boards, and sadly in most cases the school boards have ignored them. But ultimately it’s up to the teachers to implement the policies, and most are too afraid to refuse. By bravely taking a stand for her faith, Mirella is fighting back not only for herself, but for all teachers and children whose religious beliefs oppose transgender ideology.”
