San Francisco Takes a Bold Step: First Prop 36 Case Filed by DA

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A San Francisco shoplifter, 29-year-old Jason Barber, is not any stranger to the prison justice system. He has seven theft-related convictions on his document, prosecutors stated. Barber is slated to be arraigned on the Corridor of Justice on Friday afternoon for brand new fees stemming from one more shoplifting incident that he allegedly carried out Christmas Eve.

This time, Barber is dealing with extra extreme fees — his case marks town’s first case filed below Proposition 36, prosecutors stated.

Prop 36 was handed in November by California voters who have been fed up with rampant retail thefts. The brand new legislation, which went into impact on December 18, elevated punishments for repeat shoplifters. As an alternative of citing and releasing suspects for misdemeanors, thieves with lengthy rap sheets at the moment are arrested and charged with felonies.

Barber allegedly spent his Christmas Eve stealing from a Walgreens retailer on Castro Avenue in Noe Valley. Prosecutors stated he positioned cough and chilly drugs value greater than $400 right into a bag and left with out paying. Officers discovered Barber at a Muni bus cease a number of blocks away and arrested him.

District Legal professional Brooke Jenkins stated, “I would like to thank the San Francisco Police for their continuous efforts to address brazen retail theft. My office has been working closely with law enforcement and retailers to address retail theft and now thanks to the voters we have new tools available to graduate consequences and ensure that those who repeatedly break our laws are held accountable.”

The San Francisco Police Division stated Organized Retail Theft Prevention activity drive officers have made dozens of arrests in current months. Officers will proceed to conduct operations all through San Francisco to cut back thefts at native companies, police stated.

One other San Francisco man, 38-year-old Matthew Foster, was nabbed for allegedly shoplifting at Metro Mall Purchasing Middle in Colma earlier this week.

Foster used a suitcase to steal almost $200 value of things, police stated. The Colma Police Division wrote, “(Foster) was on Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) Probation. A criminal history check conducted by our dispatchers revealed this male had four prior theft convictions and three prior drug offense convictions. With the new Proposition 36 law going into effect on December 18th, this male was placed under arrest for felony theft and felony drug possession with priors.”

Foster was booked right into a San Mateo County Jail on fees together with felony theft, felony drug possession, and shoplifting.
