Tragic Identity Revealed: Pedestrian Victim of Nice Freeway Crash Struggled with Dementia

(KRON) — The San Francisco Workplace of the Chief Medical Examiner has recognized the girl who was fatally struck on the Nice Freeway two days after Christmas.

Melissa Lai Chow, 68, of San Francisco, was hit by a automobile on the Higher Nice Freeway and Ulloa Avenue on Dec. 27, San Francisco police stated.

Officers responded at about 5:43 a.m. to a report of a collision involving a pedestrian, San Francisco police stated. Chow was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening accidents and was later declared useless. Police stated the motive force of the automobile remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.

The crash marked town’s twenty fourth pedestrian loss of life of 2024.

Chow’s household shared that she suffered from dementia, which led her to wander from house on that tragic day. They’ve created a GoFundMe to assist increase consciousness in regards to the situation.

Within the GoFundMe submit, the household wrote, “She lived with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a cruel condition that affects behavior, judgment, and memory. Despite the precautions we took to keep her safe, she managed to wander from home that day. We searched frantically and called the police, but by the time we learned what had happened, it was too late. She was struck by a car and did not survive.”

San Francisco voters in November handed a measure to shut the Higher Nice Freeway to visitors and create an oceanside park.
