(BCN) — Metropolis leaders and skate boarders gathered Friday to unveil the expanded United Nations Skate Plaza, including 2,100 sq. toes of latest skateable area within the coronary heart of downtown.
The growth, designed by Olympic skateboarder and architect Alexis Sablone, options three geometric skateable artwork items.
The mission, made potential by partnerships with The Skatepark Undertaking (TSP) and Converse, goals to boost accessibility and engagement for skaters of all talent ranges, metropolis officers mentioned.
Officers praised the mission as a part of San Francisco’s broader effort to revitalize U.N. Plaza, which debuted in November 2023 following a $2 million overhaul by the Recreation and Park Division.

“This isn’t just a skate plaza–it’s a symbol of how we can creatively transform public spaces to meet the needs of our community and make our neighborhoods safer and more connected,” mentioned District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood, consultant for the Civic Middle neighborhood.
A celebration hosted by Converse, TSP, and Skate Like a Woman passed off on Saturday, and featured giveaways, trick competitions, and stay skate demos.
The plaza, initially designed by native skate boarders, stays a key attraction within the metropolis’s downtown, drawing greater than 340,000 guests in its first 12 months and contributing to a 79% discount in daytime drug-related incidents, metropolis officers mentioned.
