SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KRON) — Twelve jurors reached a verdict Wednesday deciding the destiny of a person who murdered 8-year-old Madyson “Maddy” Middleton in Santa Cruz.

Gonzalez has served almost a decade in juvenile custody, and beneath California’s juvenile justice legal guidelines, he was eligible to be freed. The jury’s verdict now blocks his launch from custody. Gonzalez by no means mentioned a phrase as the decision was revealed within the courtroom.

Gonzalez was 15-years-old when he lured Maddy into his mom’s residence on the Tannery Arts Middle on July 26, 2015, he admitted on the stand. Gonzalez strangled the woman on his mattress, sexually assaulted her when she fell unconscious, and stabbed Maddy to demise inside a trash can.

California regulation states that anybody who’s 15 years outdated, or youthful, on the time of their crime ought to be launched from custody after they flip 25, whatever the severity of their crime.

The jury’s verdict needed to reply one query: If launched from custody, will Gonzalez pose an “unreasonable risk of danger” to the general public? Jurors may have voted to reply that query as “true,” to maintain him locked up, or “untrue,” to grant freedom.

For his trial, the jury listened to months of testimony in Santa Cruz County Superior Courtroom with Choose Denine Man presiding.

Throughout closing arguments final week, the prosecutor instructed jurors that Gonzalez wore a “mask” when he testified on the stand that was “meant to trick us into believing he’s safe … into believing he’s rehabilitated. Secrets, callous, lack of empathy — that’s all innate in him. He hid who he was (in 2015), and he’s hiding who he is now.”

Prosecutor Tara George mentioned, “He’s deceived every single person he’s ever come into contact with. Adrian Gonzalez is the ultimate chameleon.”

One purpose why Gonzalez continues to be harmful, based on George, is his lack of empathy and regret for murdering Maddy. “He told you he hasn’t shed one tear,” George mentioned. “Everybody in this room has shed tears about what happened. The community has cried. Adrian? Not a tear.”

The prosecutor instructed jurors that Gonzalez is a sexually deviant psychopath. “That little girl had no idea what was coming. He wanted her to suffer. We know he was influenced by porn and by serial killers,” she mentioned.

For his closing arguments, protection lawyer Charlie Stevens instructed jurors that Gonzalez wished to indicate the jury that he’s particular person. By way of years of rehabilitation packages, intercourse offender therapy, and remedy, he’s not a depressed and suicidal teenager who would not care about anybody, Stevens mentioned.

Gonzalez might be eligible for a brand new trial in two years.
