VTA Strike: Three Days Without Bus Service and Counting!

VTA Strike: Three Days Without Bus Service and Counting!

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — Wednesday marks Day 3 for a large strike staged by greater than 1,000 Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) workers. Bus and lightweight rail service stay suspended indefinitely.

VTA officers wrote on X Wednesday morning, “VTA is still working to resolve the labor conflict. In the meantime there is no bus or light rail service.”

The Amalgamated Transit Union Native 265 launched the strike beginning one minute after midnight on Monday. The union represents over 1,500 VTA workers, together with bus and lightweight rail operators, upkeep workers, dispatchers, fare inspectors, and customer support representatives.

VTA officers stated the strike’s impacts are “devastating” for the tens of 1000’s of riders who depend on buses and lightweight rail trains to get to highschool and work.

Union members are staging the strike to demand increased wages, a safer office, and higher remedy of workers. The union is demanding 6 p.c wage will increase yearly for the subsequent three years.

In accordance with transit company officers, the VTA supplied a wage improve of 4%, 3%, and a couple of% over three years, for a complete compounded improve of 9%. Officers stated their supply permits the company to keep up present transportation service ranges, and avoids cuts to each service and staffing.

Along with increased wages, VTA workers are demanding extra security on the job. As ATU president John Costa instructed KRON4, “1,500 of my members walked off the job for respect, for a decent wage. Every day they are abused. You get spit at, you get punched, you get stabbed, you get cursed at. And the next day, you go right back around the circle and the same people are there.”

The union is asking on VTA managers to return to the bargaining desk and negotiate in good religion. On Sunday, the 2 sides met, “but there were no meaningful negotiations,” transit company officers wrote.

On Tuesday, the VTA filed a lawsuit in opposition to the Amalgamated Transit Union for allegedly breaching a “no strike” clause of their collective bargaining settlement. “This strike is having an amazing influence on the group. Getting our buses and trains rolling is crucial,” stated VTA CEO Carolyn Gonot stated.

Tensions had been operating excessive when a supervisor drove out of the VTA’s Cerone yard Monday. Some picketers started shouting and banging on the automobile’s home windows. The supervisor “became fearful for his safety and attempted to drive forward to leave the area. Several picketers then jumped in front of the VTA vehicle,” the company wrote. Police had been referred to as to the scene. VTA officers stated the supervisor was not at fault for the accident, and they’ll submit a “Workplace Violence Prevention Incident Report” to doc what occurred.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the strike continues.
