SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — Wednesday marks Day 3 for a large strike staged by greater than 1,000 Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) workers. Bus and lightweight rail service stay suspended indefinitely.
VTA officers wrote on X Wednesday morning, “VTA is still working to resolve the labor conflict. In the meantime there is no bus or light rail service.”
The Amalgamated Transit Union Native 265 launched the strike beginning one minute after midnight on Monday. The union represents over 1,500 VTA workers, together with bus and lightweight rail operators, upkeep workers, dispatchers, fare inspectors, and customer support representatives.
VTA officers stated the strike’s impacts are “devastating” for the tens of 1000’s of riders who depend on buses and lightweight rail trains to get to highschool and work.

As ATU president John Costa instructed KRON4, “1,500 of my members walked off the job for respect, for a decent wage. Every day they are abused. You get spit at, you get punched, you get stabbed, you get cursed at. And the next day, you go right back around the circle and the same people are there.”
The union is asking on VTA managers to return to the bargaining desk and negotiate in good religion. On Sunday, the 2 sides met, “but there were no meaningful negotiations,” transit company officers wrote.
On Tuesday, the VTA filed a lawsuit in opposition to the Amalgamated Transit Union for allegedly breaching a “no strike” clause of their collective bargaining settlement. “This strike is having an amazing influence on the group.
