(KRON) — Two species of poisonous mushrooms may be discovered at sure parks within the East Bay this winter, the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) stated. The mushrooms may be lethal to people and animals if eaten.

The mushrooms are known as the “death cap” and the “western destroying angel.” They’re primarily related to oak timber and may be discovered wherever the place there are oak roots, EBRPD stated.

Signs from consuming the mushrooms initially embrace digestive issues, and so they can progress to liver and kidney failure if not handled instantly. Signs sometimes seem within the first 12 hours after consuming the mushrooms. Pet homeowners are suggested to contact a veterinarian in the event that they assume their pet ate one in all these mushrooms.

“The death cap is a medium to large mushroom that typically has a greenish-gray cap, white gills, a white ring around the stem, and a large white sac at the base of the stem,” EBRPD stated.

Whereas it’s sometimes related to oak timber, the mushroom may be discovered close to different sorts of hardwood timber. It isn’t native to California and was dropped at North America on European oaks.

In 2023, three individuals died from suspected loss of life cap poisonings in Australia. Nationwide Geographic stated they’re answerable for 90% of mushroom-related deaths.

It’s native to California and solely grows round oaks. It sometimes seems in late winter to spring.
