Driver of flatbed lumber truck sentenced to 1 yr in demise of cyclists

(KRON) — The driving force of a flatbed lumber truck was sentenced to a yr in jail for his position within the 2023 demise of two Oregon cyclists alongside the Silverado Path in Napa County. Porfirio Sanchez didn’t correctly safe the lumber load he was hauling on the morning of Oct. 17, 2023, in line with the Napa County District Lawyer’s Workplace.

This induced a big piece of lumber to swing out perpendicular to the truck and strike Christian Deaton, 52, and Michelle Deaton, 48. The Oregon couple had been using their bicycles alongside the Silverado Path on the time.

Sanchez, in line with the DA, signed a plea settlement on Nov. 14, 2024, wherein he pled no contest to 2 counts of vehicular manslaughter. Based on the plea settlement, he agreed to serve as much as 4 years in state jail.

Nevertheless, after listening to testimony from Christian Deaton’s brother, who requested leniency for Sanchez, the decide sentenced him to 364 days in jail. The decide went on to remain 180 of these days upon the completion of 180 hours of neighborhood service associated to bike security.

Sanchez can even obtain two years of formal probation.

“It seems that everyone in this case, generally, is requesting justice and mercy,” stated Choose Scott Younger throughout Friday’s sentencing. “The Court is moved by the amount of grace in this courtroom by all the families.”

“This case boils down to two happy, healthy lives that were cut short due to the negligence of the defendant,” stated Napa County Deputy District Lawyer Shashawnya Worley. “Their deaths have had a profound impact on their family and friends. There’s nothing I can say or do today that can bring back their loved ones, but I hope that this sentence can bring them closure.”
