Metropolis officers in Santa Cruz say swindlers claiming to symbolize companies on the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf are soliciting donations following the construction’s partial collapse. 

“This is a scam,” officers stated on social media Saturday. “These actions take advantage of the kindness and generosity of our community.”

The wharf was closed after about 150 ft broke off at its finish on Monday when it was battered by waves that the Nationwide Climate Service estimated at as much as 30 ft excessive.

“All official fundraising efforts will be clearly communicated through official City of Santa Cruz channels, including our website and social media pages,” officers stated. “In case you encounter what you imagine to be a fundraising rip-off, please tell us. “

The part that collapsed had been closed due to harm from earlier storms in late 2023 and early 2024.

Three individuals fell into the water when the collapse occurred, however nobody was injured.

Officers stated structural evaluation of the wharf and removing of heavy tools that fell into the water may take a number of weeks to a month or longer.
