Investigators decided that Hernandez was an unhoused girl dwelling within the alley. She was badly crushed, sexually assaulted and strangled.

The case lay dormant till 2023, when SFPD’s Chilly Case Unit reopened it. DNA profiles from the scene matched an offender named Ricky Dawson.

Dawson can also be linked to 3 different circumstances involving sexual assault and murder in Seattle, Denver and Panama Seaside, Fla. He’s at present awaiting a homicide trial in Denver.

SFPD issued an arrest warrant for Dawson in reference to Hernandez’s homicide on Jan. 2. He will likely be transported to San Francisco after his trial in Denver.
